SEDA students from Dandenong and Bonbeach were busy in September, coordinating two regional AFL 9’s Gala days for local primary and secondary schools as part of their major projects.
SEDA Dandenong conducted a ‘Casey/Dandenong zone’ Gala day for Primary schools and a second event for Secondary schools.
SEDA Bonbeach conducted a ‘Frankston/Mornington zone’ Gala day for Primary schools and a second event for Secondary schools.
In November, the winners from the September Gala Days travelled to Bonbeach for the Regional Championship Finals.
The day was split into two parts, the Primary School competition (grade 3 & 4 students) took place in the morning, followed by the Secondary School competition in the afternoon (year 7 & 8 students).
The Primary Schools represented in the boy’s division finals were St Agatha’s, St Louis de Montfort, Hillsmeade and Chelsea with St Agatha’s, St Louis, Hampton Park and Belvedere Park battling it out in the girls division.
After three rounds of play, the boys final saw an undefeated St Louis outfit take on St Agatha’s.
In the girls competition St Agatha’s played Hampton Park.
At the final siren, St Agatha’s boys and girls teams were celebrating after they were victorious in both divisions.
In the Seconday Schools Compeititon Boys Division it was Patterson River and Fountain Gate, in the girls it was Fountain Gate, Patterson River and McClelland College
With only two teams in the boys division, organising a fair fixture wasn’t on the cards. So after some discussion, it was decided that Patterson River and Fountain Gate would each play a practice game against a mixed SEDA AFL squad as a warm up.
After the practice games, the Grand Final between Fountain Gate and Patterson River got underway. Fountain Gate continued their undefeated streak by taking out the trophy in the Grand Final.
In the girls division McClelland and Patterson River fought out a nail biter.
As the final siren sounded, Patterson River were victorious by 7 points. Thanks must go to all of our enthiusiatic teachers who have embraced the AFL 9’s concept and supported the Gala days.
Congratulations to all of the students that participated on the day. All games were played in great spirit with all students showing great sportsmanship and putting on a fantastic spectacle for everyone to see. The day was a great advertisement for how fun and enjoyable AFL 9’s can be.
Lastly, thanks must go to the SEDA teachers Nick and Luke and the students who organised the event as part of their studies.
